Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licence (RDS CAL) for Windows Server 2016. Every user or device that connects to Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on Windows Server 2016 needs an RDS CAL.
- User CAL – one person, any number of devices.
- Device CAL – one device, any number of users.
An RDS CAL is in addition to the standard Windows Server 2016 CAL: each user or device needs both. Choose the CAL type and enter how many RDS CALs you need in the quantity box. User and Device CALs cost the same. Delivered digitally by email.

I purchased a Windows Server 2016 User RDS CAL for a small office setup and the process was straightforward from start to finish. The licence details arrived by email shortly after payment, with clear information on what was supplied and how to proceed with activation. I already had the standard Windows Server CALs in place, so adding the RDS CAL through the Remote Desktop Licensing Manager was uncomplicated. It activated without any issues and the users can now connect remotely as expected from their own devices. The digital delivery was much quicker than ordering physical paperwork, and the price was reasonable compared with other options I checked. Everything matched the product description, so I am very happy with the purchase.

The RDS CAL was delivered by email, but the activation instructions were so unclear that I could not install it without contacting support. It eventually worked, but the extra delay and back-and-forth made this a very frustrating purchase.
